OPENING OF THE JUBILEE YEAR
VENERABLE MOTHER MARY THEODORA VOIRON
On July 17, the inauguration of the Jubilee Year celebrations for the centenary of the death of Venerable Mother Maria Teodora Voiron took place in Itu/SP.
Mother Teodora was born in France in 1835. She came to Brazil as a nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1859 and died in 1925, with a reputation for holiness among those who knew her. Since then, there have been thousands of reports of graces achieved through her. In 1998, she was declared Venerable by the Church.
We began the memorable event with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Postulator, Fr. Sydnei Macedo Gonçalves and concelebrants for the cause of beatification. Thereafter, the inauguration of the Memorial of Venerable Maria Teodora Voiron took place. We concluded this event with a social gathering for all the participants.
The Eucharistic celebration opened the celebrations for the jubilee year. In his homily, Fr. Sydnei commented on Mother Teodora's heroic deeds, her trust and unwavering faith in God and service to others. Fr. Sydnei invited us to pray a rosary or ten rosaries in our homes every 17th of each month during the jubilee year. We accepted his invitation with great enthusiasm.
PRAYING MOMENT
At the end of the Mass, Our Provincial Councillors Srs. Arzila Pértille and Rita Tessaro spoke on behalf of our Provincial Superior, Sister Maria da Consolação Coelho Rocha, and all the Sisters of the Brazilian Province:
"To celebrate the opening of the centenary of the death of Venerable Maria Teodora Voiron is to bring present the life and history of a person who left traces of faith, dynamism and change (...) May this celebration inspire us to follow in her footsteps, to care for those in need and to keep the flame of compassion alive in our hearts." And about the Memorial, they said: "The Maria Teodora Voiron Memorial is a space to be visited, contemplated, because it is the reliquary of the great legacy left by Venerable Mother Maria Teodora and our first predecessor Sisters, their works and mission in Brazil (...) With joy and enthusiasm, we make the Mother Teodora Memorial available to the community, to be a place of visit, acknowledgement of her holy life, and of prayer. They concluded with the words of Pope Francis: "You not only have a glorious history to remember and tell, but a great history to build! Look to the future in which the Spirit protects you so that you can still do great things."
The inauguration of the Jubilee Year was a time of prayer, faith, thanksgiving, supplication, dialog and sharing. We gave thanks to God for everything!
