CRB of Paraná Hosts Meeting on Synodal Leadership and Community Care in Curitiba

On March 15th and 16th, more than 90 people participated in the Community Coordinators’ Meeting, organized by the Regional Conference of Religious of Brazil (CRB) of Paraná, held at the House of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Curitiba (PR). The event was facilitated by Sister Susana Rocca from the Sisters of the Risen Jesus, who led reflections on the theme “Synodal Leadership in Times of Care, Mediation, and Hope.”

The meeting emphasized the importance of leadership rooted in listening, trust, and welcome, while avoiding rigid hierarchical structures. Among the challenges discussed were the experience of loneliness within communities, the need for flexibility in routines, and the importance of discernment in community management.

Synodal Leadership and Community Care

The proposed synodal leadership model is based on building healthy relationships, shared responsibility, and encouraging the autonomy of the Sisters. The importance of creating lighter, more flexible structures was highlighted, ensuring that each member of the community is valued and supported in developing their gifts.

Additionally, the discussions addressed sensitive topics such as depression and isolation in religious communities, which are often overlooked. Leaders were encouraged to remain attentive to signs of distress and to create spaces for listening and support. Adjustments to routines were also suggested to ensure quality of life, including providing adequate rest periods.

Another key point discussed was the need for coherence between words and actions in religious life. Excessive activism without a deep sense of spirituality can alienate young vocations. Therefore, leadership must balance professionalism with a genuine witness of faith, promoting a sustainable pace for the Sisters.

Listening and Authority as Service

Listening was underscored as one of the pillars of effective leadership, requiring empathetic and respectful engagement. Authority should be understood as a service, avoiding authoritarian tendencies and fostering collaboration and mutual respect.

The meeting also touched on sensitive issues like affectivity and sexuality. Participants recognized that silencing these topics can lead to suffering and harm fraternal life. Leaders were encouraged to address these matters with transparency and compassion.

Commitment to the Common Good

At the end of the meeting, the importance of strengthening fraternal relationships and fostering a spirit of communion was reaffirmed. Leaders were reminded to remain committed to the common good and to maintain open dialogue within their communities.

Participants were invited to reflect on the question: “Are we being good leaders? In what ways can we improve?” The synodal journey calls for commitment, attentive listening, and dedication to building healthier and more fraternal religious communities.
