Dear Sisters,
October 15, 2024 marks the opening of the 375th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph by Father Jean-Pierre Médaille in Le Puy, France in 1650. This date marks our common foundation as Sisters of Saint Joseph. From Le Puy, we were called and missioned to be among God’s people - wherever the need was greatest - first in France, and then throughout the world. Using the image of a large tree, we are now many branches and leaves with different names, but all with the same roots. We are a large ‘family’ of Saint Joseph with Sisters and Associates and lay collaborators in all parts of the world. From our humble beginnings in Le Puy, we have immersed ourselves into many cultures and touched the lives of innumerable people.
We, Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry, who date our particular foundation – our ‘branch’ - to 1812, are invited to celebrate our common anniversary, renewing within ourselves a deep love for our Founder and great gratitude for the first six women who followed him.
May we continue to live with the passion and missionary zeal of these first six women, ‘as a leaven of unity in the world,’ witnessing to ‘Our charism of total union of ourselves and others with God and all people.’ (Constitution, pp. 3, 5).
