Two Centuries of Service Celebrated in Pinerolo

Imagem Destaque

On November 9, 2025, the city of Pinerolo in northern Italy marked the two hundredth anniversary of the Sisters of St. Joseph with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the historic Basilica of San Maurizio. The event brought together representatives from across the international family of St. Joseph. The Italian Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph participated, joined by seventeen members of various General Councils, expressing the unity and support of the Global Family of St. Joseph. The General Council of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry was also present, along with three sisters from Savoy—an important symbolic link to the origins of the Congregation.

It was from Chambéry that Mother Marcoux, two centuries ago, sent the first community of sisters to Pinerolo. Among them was the young superior, Mother Speranza, who is recognized as the founder of the Pinerolo Congregation. The dioceses of Chambéry and Pinerolo share a historical bond through Bishop Pierre-Joseph Rey, whose legacy continues to guide the mission of the sisters today.

The anniversary celebration crowned a series of events that had begun more than a month earlier. On September 26, alumni gathered at the Maria Immacolata Institute to open the commemorations. In October, the publication of Pierre-Joseph Rey: A Pastor for Our Time offered a deeper understanding of the bishop’s life and influence through expert reflections, selected readings, and personal testimonies—including one from a member of the Rey family.

The program also featured a musical performance and the presentation of a detailed account of the Congregation’s two centuries of history, based on extensive research in archives and personal memoirs. On the eve of the main celebration, the Diocesan Museum inaugurated the exhibition “200 Years of Care and Education,” which traces the sisters’ longstanding commitment to education, social service, and spiritual formation. Their work has played a significant role in shaping the cultural, social, and spiritual development of the Pinerolo region.

November 9th celebration brought these events to a fitting close, highlighting an anniversary marked not only by remembrance but also by gratitude and renewed hope. For the international family of St. Joseph, it was a moment to honor a shared heritage and to look forward to the mission that continues to inspire their service around the world.
