Knowing how to listen carefully has extraordinary potential. Like a lamp that, when placed high up, has the ability to illuminate all around and make those who enter the house see the light, so also attentive listening is capable of making the vulnerable visible. Authentic listening, however, is uncomfortable because it requires leaving behind one's own convictions to go towards the other and understand them. True listening is, therefore, risky because it makes those who are open to the encounter vulnerable. Yet, to follow Jesus Christ, the itinerant God with nowhere to lay his head, it is crucial to take the risk.
In Nemi, during this Extended Council, we are seriously questioning ourselves about the quality of our listening and how far our listening is synodal, capable of running the risk of being touched and changed by otherness. In reality, inclusive listening to differences and minorities has been a process that has been underway for years in our Congregation, but we feel that something is missing. And something is always missing every time we go to the existential peripheries and courageously start to really listen. It is then that we realize that we have a long way to go.
A VISIBLE SIGN OF GOD'S LOVE
In today's Gospel the Lord reminded us to pay attention to how we listen and the talk by Fr. Camillo Ripamonti - president of the Astalli Center in Rome, JRS Italy - highlighted its centrality. Religious Life often proclaims that it walks with the poor without declaring who these poor are. It risks speaking for an anonymous crowd and not for faces with a name. Religious people often walk with the poor, giving them what they need, but they do not walk for the poor, that is, they do not change their lifestyle. We know how to give, we also know how to be generous but we struggle to take on the other's point of view, a vision dictated by a private life of many comforts and - alas - rights.
In today's world, the rights of all have become the privileges of a few! And this cannot be accepted. Maybe it is because we perceive ourselves as a people on the move, but in walking there are those who cannot keep up with the pace and fall behind. But these, the last and the vulnerable, are like the missing pieces of a puzzle, without which the picture is not complete, and the meaning cannot be found. The marginalized, colors that are often kept hidden by institutions are, in truth, those who give meaning and fulfillment to the life of all humanity. Choosing to walk with and for them, changing our lifestyle. Since our way of life has an impact on the life of the "humblest", it will make us a lamp placed on a candelabrum, a visible sign of God's love among his people.
