EXTENDED COUNCIL- SOCIAL MEDIA AND OUR PRESENCE THROUGH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Imagem Destaque

SEPTEMBER 24

This morning, we awoke to the beauty of the fog covering the lake. It represented the mystery of what this day might bring and an invitation to our prayer as we gathered for small group prayer and sharing. The Gospel reading invited us to Hear/ Listen differently to God’s call to be attentive to the word of God, listening for the many ways God reveals Godself to us.

As the meeting began in the Aula, the Region of Pakistan invited us to pray with hand gestures while listening to St. Ignatius’ Prayer of Surrender.

Today was the International Communication Commission’s turn to share with us all the amazing work they do for the Congregation. What would we do without the ICC who has such fiery passion for this important service. The hours they give to this work, the skills they share, and the multiple benefits for all of us in sharing our mission are enormous. They model for all of us what can happen when we work collaboratively, generously sharing our gifts.

IMPOTANCE OF TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT AI

Sisters Laveena and Eliana gave presentations on Social Media and our presence through Digital Technology. Laveena shared with us Canon 666 in which there is the reminder that as Women Religious our use of social media requires great discretion. She tied in God’s pastoral plan of Creation, Revelation, Incarnation and Evangelization with ways we can use the digital media to share this plan. She offered critical questions for us to use when evaluating our Digital Presence, such as does it offer a reflection on humanity, authenticity of relationships and recognition of our neighbor?

Sister Eliana shared information on how to verify Fake News and how important this is when we share that news with others through our social media. She also reminded us of how easy it is for others to modify what we send out and associate the changes with us. Eliana talked to us about Artificial Intelligence or AI which can be a useful tool but also can be biased and contain errors. AI performs tasks that are usually done by humans, i.e. research, synthesis, solves problems, etc. It is very expensive. It is important that all of us be educated about AI.

CALL TO MISSION

We then traveled to our missions of South Sudan, where Sister Bindhu, uses her skills as a doctor to help the very poor in this collaborative mission sponsored by UISG/USG. The area is surrounded by conflict and often war. From there we visited Sweden and Tanzania. Sisters Elisa and Dolores shared the growth and current needs for sisters and other resources in these two missions.

They called us to encourage our sisters to be available to serve in these missions and for us, as leaders, to see other ways our provinces and regions can support the mission.

In the afternoon we had personal reflection and discussion of the Call to Mission in our mixed language groups. It was a stimulating day!
