A Historic Milestone for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph
On October 7, 2025, the Tanmaya Province of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph joyfully came together for a Special Virtual Prayer Service to mark an extraordinary milestone — 375 years of grace, mission, and transformation. Organized by the Tanmaya Communication Commission and the Tanmaya Communicators, the event served as a spiritual and historical tribute, uniting the Sisters in reflection, gratitude, celebration and renewed commitment to our founding vision.
A Call to Return to Our Origins
The prayer service commenced at 6:00 p.m. with a warm welcome from Sr. Gloria Clarence, coordinator of the Communication Commission. Conducted meaningfully by Srs. Sagaya and Seema the prayer centered around the theme:
“Return to the inspiring sources of our origin.”
This powerful theme invited participants to journey back in time — to 1650, when the Congregation was founded in Le Puy, France, by Fr. Jean Pierre Medaille. From its humble beginnings, the Sisters of St. Joseph have grown into a global presence, embodying a mission of unity and compassionate service across four continents.
Telling Our Story Through Media
A highlight of the celebration was the official launch of a special commemorative video, lovingly prepared by Sr. Archana and her team, and released by Sr. Philo, Provincial Superior. The video traced the Congregation’s journey through the centuries:
Today, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry serve in over a dozen countries, living out our enduring charism:
“The unity of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God.”
The video celebrated the Sisters’ ongoing involvement in education, healthcare, social work, parish ministry, and justice advocacy — a legacy of faith and service that continues to respond dynamically to the needs of the times as Pilgrims of Hope.
Symbolism in Art and Design
Following the video, Sr. Monica and her team unveiled a beautifully crafted commemorative flex, also released by Sr. Philo. Admired for its profound message and artistic depth, the flex was described as more than a visual — it was a spiritual reflection. It invited all who viewed it to reconnect with our roots, draw courage from the past, and walk boldly into the future with faith and fidelity. This flex will be sent to each community for displaying in our communities as a memory for 375 years.
Message from the Provincial Superior
In her heartfelt address, Sr. Philo extended Feast Day greetings of Our Lady of the Rosary, invoking Mary’s continued accompaniment on the congregation’s journey. Reflecting on the legacy represented by the flex, she challenged the Sisters to introspect:
“We have a rich history, and we are proud to be Sisters of St. Joseph. Each one must ask: Am I truly proud to be a Sister of St. Joseph? Is the Lord happy that we are His chosen ones? What step do I need to take to move forward in fidelity?”
She urged all to pray as Fr. Medaille once did — to seek the Lord’s guidance, especially in times of struggle.
“The Lord will lead us forward,” she affirmed. “Today, with you, I recommit myself and our Province. We return to the Lord a hundred-fold in response to His goodness — looking to Him, clinging to Him — as we move forward with courage and commitment.”
Creative Expressions of Joy
Adding a vibrant touch to the celebration was a Tableau Competition featuring enthusiastic participation from 18 communities across the Province. Through powerful visual storytelling, each tableau brought alive the spirit and history of the Congregation creatively. The results were as follows:
As the event reached its joyful climax, postulants offered a melodious song of greetings, and communities cut cakes in each community — symbols of unity, festivity, and gratitude for the remarkable journey of the Congregation.
“The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph lives on as a story of faith, courage, and service — always unfolding, always responding, always moving forward.”
375 years later, the Sisters of St. Joseph continue to embody a vibrant legacy — one that inspires transformation, fosters unity, and walks faithfully in the footsteps of their founding vision. This celebration was not just a commemoration of the past but a bold recommitment to the future.
