GENERAL CHAPTER IN NEMI - 12/08

    FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Today’s Scripture reading from Luke 1:26-28 expresses well this time of General Chapter. Mary and Joseph likely had dreams and expectations of how their lives might unfold with some certainty—courtship, marriage, and the hope of children; everyday life in Nazareth. Yet, God had a different dream for them. Challenging in its revelation is a very mild way of suggesting how God’s dream came to them: one in the form of an unannounced angel, the other while deep in slumber. Being human, we can only guess their amazement and perhaps fear of their celestial bearers of God’s Word.

Only deep faith allowed both Mary and Joseph to accept a transformation of what they thought life would be, and let go of their expectations to allow God’s plans to be born in them. Indeed, they were unaware how their ‘yes’ to what was imaginable would change the world forever.

NEW WAYS OF LIVING THE CHARISM AND OUR SPIRITUALITY

Forty-three delegates came to this 30th General Chapter with personal hopes and dreams, along with the dreams from respective Provinces, Regions, and Missions. This has been a remarkable experience of God’s over-flowing graces that created spaces for deep listening and conversation with one another. Dreams and hopes found themselves reshaped, molded into new ways of living the Charism and our spirituality.

Working through the calls for the Congregation, the proposals received, the draft of the Final Document, and other business items, we live the same reality as Mary and Joseph. Yet, unexpected changes, and our ‘yes’ to those, bring new life and energy to the Congregation.

MAY WE NEVER CEASE DREAMING FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD

We are convinced that new life rises among us and in all members of the Congregation as we allow God’s dreams to unfold in us and blend with our dreams in every moment of our lives.

Today, we are blessed to be together for the closing of the Year of St. Joseph, our Patron. In the closing liturgy of the day, our voices blended harmoniously in song even though we did not speak the same native language. The individual notes and harmony suggest once more that, together, the dream God has for the Congregation can and will live on.

That dream continues to expand as we are open and receptive to moments of faithful listening to God's dream for us.  May we never cease dreaming for the life of the world.
