e World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking

The Commission for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC)

    Dear Sisters and Associates,

The World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking is celebrated on February 8 th. This day, we commemorate the Feast of St.Josefina Bakita, a victim of human trafficking. Sadly, her experience is that of many thousands of women, men and children in our world. Raising awareness of this evil in our individual societies and throughout the world is not enough. We must begin to realize and address the realities that allow this evil to continue – poverty and destitution, marginalization, low or no self-esteem, and finally on side of the perpetrators, greed. (According to the United Nations, the business of human trafficking generates more than 32 billion dollars a year.)

The World Day of Prayer and Reflection allows us to reflect and join with others willing to actwith  determination to remove this shameful evil from our world community. Each of us, in our own small communities, can help to promote a more just, equitable and accepting society. We need only the will to do it, and the eyes to see our neighbors in poverty or despair. In addition to promoting moments of prayer and reflection in our religious communities on February 8th, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry are invited to engage with other organizations, ecclesial and civil, in discussions, workshops or forums, aimed at promoting initiatives to combat and confront human trafficking.
