05.20.2023 | THE SILVER JUBILEE OF THE MISSION IN SAN RAMÓN BENI-BOLIVIA

On May 14, 2023, the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery at San Ramón in Beni/Bolivia, celebrated its Silver Jubilee of the mission. The specific history and important events of this place were reasons for joy and great challenges.

Initially, the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of San Joaquim came frequently to San Ramón to accompany some pastoral work, but due to transportation difficulties, we were compelled to open a community in this city.

In 1998, the community was formed by two Sisters: Antônia Constantina Madro and Madina Moraña Suárez, who dedicated themselves with joy to the evangelization and social works of the Church. However, unexpectedly, on February 7, 1999, there was a tragic accident in Magdalena, where Srs. Cilene and Maria and a young aspirant lost their lives. This event made us to close the community, just one year after its opening.

In 2002, with the arrival of another Brazilian Sister in Bolivia, the community of San Ramón was opened for the second time. Srs. Edith Durán and Bernadete Furlaneto (Bené) were the members of this community.

SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH, PERSEVERANCE AND AUDACITY IN SERVICE

A Sister of St. Joseph must always be ready to go where God asks her to go, and to do this, a total detachment is necessary, even of one’s own life. Thus, the Sisters continued their work with great dedication with the Ramonian people. However, on November 26, 2007, this community was shaken, once again, with the accident on the Machupo River, in San Ramón, Sr. Edith Durán, the first Bolivian Sister, died at the age of 42.

But missionary life does not end there. The Sisters of St. Joseph continue with perseverance and audacity to give their service to the neediest through social works, and different pastoral activities. They continue attending to the children, young people, women and the elderly in their multiple needs.

Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (Jn 12,24-26).

On May 14, 2023, we celebrated the 25 years of service in the mission of San Ramón - Beni – Bolivia. We cherished the history and lives totally given for this mission. We conducted a triduum which was well attended and lived intensely together with the parish community, especially with the children and youth, who gave life and joy to the moments of prayer and meetings. We concluded the Silver Jubilee celebration with the Holy Mass which was presided over by Bishop Emeritus Dom Julio Maria Elias and priest friends and almost all the Sisters of the Region.
