LAUDATO SI’ WEEK - Seven years after the encyclical

What is Laudato Si’ week ?

Laudato Si’ Week began as a way to celebrate the first anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical which changed the world : "Laudato Si’- On Care for our Common Home."  Since then, this annual celebration has become a way for all Catholics to come together and celebrate the progress made to bring Laudato Si’ to life and engage in prayer and action for our common home.

This year the theme is "Listening and Journeying Together".  Catholics across the six continents work "to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development." (LS 13) as a guide for the week-long celebration.  Throughout the world Catholicsbring ther communities together to see how Laudato Si’ offers a framework for facing the climate crisis.  At the global level Catholics join together as one family through prayer and action.  Protecting our common home requires action.  For this we can follow St. Therese of Lisieux who invites us to engage in small steps of love, not losing the opportunity for a kind word, a smile, any small way to sow peace and friendship.

LAUDATO SI’ AND THE CALLS OF OUR GENERAL CHAPTER

Integral ecology is also made up of simple ordinary gestures through which we break the chain of violence, exploitation, egoism (LS 230).  A simple smile toward a stranger can help contribute to protecting our common home.  There are many ways to build the world we want, the world we need.  Following both Laudato Si’ and the calls of our General Chapter, the province chose ways to protect all creation.

Community events that marked the week :

    • Gathering in prayer for the Armenian family and a young Ukranian men who joined us for the prayer. French language class for the young Ukranian men.  Some sisters wrote a letter to the local authorities in support of the Armenian family, so they might get the papers necessary to remain in France.
    • A Mass offered for the victims of the climate crisis and for the loss of biodiversity. We gave thanks to the Creator for all the gifts of creation.
    • Collecting plastic waste and cigarette butts in the Aix les Bains railway station and around the Lake Bourget. Also marching and singing, holding written signs speaking of the need to protect our common home, to raise awareness.
    • A day of prayer for China and the children who have disappeared
    • A meal eaten outdoors, with a barbeque, and at the end of the week we planted squash seeds in the courtyard of Bellecombette.

During the week the Spirit was inviting us to leave our hearts open, engaged for mission, even if the body could no longer go beyond the physical limits which we experience.  As we moved toward Pentecost. we felt the invitation to go to the essential and to go the limits of trust to " involve ourselves with the laity in the work of justice, advocating for the defense and protection of the environment and the needy" (Final Document 2021

May web e guided by this Spirit who leads us, in communion with creation
