    From Canon Law to China

This was yet another day when we were stretched in several directions.  The morning began with a valuable and interesting presentation by Mary Wright, IBVM, a canon lawyer.  She first explained the issue of patrimony and the congregation’s responsibility in this regard.  In speaking of the vow of poverty Mary gave the insight that the vow is not about money, but about power and control.  She then answered numerous questions posed by the assembly on various issues including that of exclaustration.

The day continued with the provincial council from Pinerolo, who were with us for the first week, giving information and insights into the process they undertook leading to their request for fusion with the congregation of Chambery.  In the past 2 years there has been an ongoing effort for the two congregations to know one another – the general councils meeting virtually and face to face; sisters form Pinerolo coming to Rome for the provincial assembly and other meetings; the provincial councils spending time together in Pinerolo. All are convinced that this is, indeed, the work of the Spirit.

After PInerolo we were invited to go to China.  S. Ayli, the superior general of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Handan, was with us for the first week.  She explained about the situation of the sisters and the fact that the congregation, which is part of the underground church, is not able at this time to gather as a group or have a public face.  She answered many questions, stretching from formation to financial support. More than once she repeated that the joy the sisters saw in Sally and Ieda inspired them and reinforced their desire to become one with the Chambery congregation.  We continue to work together to see the Spirit leads.
