    Spiritual Discernment

On the fifth day of our meeting, we started with a prayer in language groups, praying about discernment, grace and freedom.

In the morning, Father Paul Pinto Rolphi, SJ, helped us to reflect on spiritual discernment and accompaniment. He reviewed some aspects of spiritual discernment according to Ignatius of Loyola.

We reflected on the need to have criteria in the accompaniment and discernment about those seeking religious life. One needs to understand who is able to live the demands of consecration, their personal qualities and assess their strength to grow in identification with Jesus Christ.

A challenging aspect is the need to discern with them their motivations. Sometimes, they are unconscious about them or they are not sufficient; some may be ambitious and others at the beginning of their call.

How do we know if the person is being called? It is necessary to follow the person. Discernment is a spiritual dynamic in which the person, community or group tries to discover the will of God to follow him. It is an exercise in accordance with the attitudes of Jesus.

One dimension reflected upon was the importance of the charism as central in the process of formation. This knowledge needs to be worked on at the beginning of the process. The charism is the key that allows us to know who we are and to what we are called. The purpose of formation is the person moving forward to follow Jesus.

It was enlightening to deepen the topic of the feelings of consolation and desolation from the exegesis of the text of Luke 24:13 to 25.  Jesus, the patient and loving educator, walks with the forlorn disciples to help them find joy and meaning of their action.

We finished the work in the morning with a significant celebration with an African heart.

In the afternoon, in mixed groups, the sharing touched us, inspired us and was challenging. Then we met in assembly which was enriching.  At the end of the day, we were able to express feelings like our Creator God, who saw and felt that "everything was very good."
