What is discernment?

The journey of pilgrim formators continued today in the company of Don Vittorio Conti, a diocesan priest from Milan. As a psychologist and psychotherapist, he led us in discussion, re-reading the completed questionnaires in a critical and constructive way. He challenged us, leaving us with some basic questions: in what area should I continue to grow and form myself as a formator? What practical steps should I take to achieve this? It is really very brave on our part, he said, to stay together for 15 days to evaluate the progress made to date in initial formation and how we want to invest in the future. We were encouraged to learn new ways, questioning the very idea of discernment that we have.

To cultivate discernment it is appropriate, he reminded us, to have attitudes that combine welcoming along with interpretation providing good content. In discernment, these three basic approaches must be balanced in an attempt to understand the person entrusted to us. At the beginning of his talk, he said that if leaving the hall we felt a certain unease, he would be satisfied. Can we, as formators, enter into the life of the sisters we accompany by helping them learn to understand themselves with God\�s eyes?
