June Festivities in the São José Nursing Home

The June Celebration was lovingly prepared for several days by friends and Sisters with decorations, games, costumes and with typical food and beverages.  On June 11, the great day arrived at Taboão, where the nursing home for the Province of  São Paulo, Brazil is located. The Sisters arrived and took their seats along with various religious sisters from other congregations.

Sister Delcia Decker, a Sister of Saint Joseph, spoke briefly to open the festivities and Alessandra, a physiotherapist, briefly explained the origins of the symbols used in the celebration. Some dancing followed, where participants enjoyed the rhythms and songs. Then all sampled the food and drink, and then went on to the games.  At the end of the celebration, there were expressions of joy, and one could hear, ‘Hooray Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter. Long live the Sisters of the Saint Joseph Nursing Home!”

The June Festival
Known as the Feast of the People’s Saints (Anthony, John and Peter), is celebrated for the entire month of June. During the festivities, friends and acquaintances come together to dance, to participate in games, to drink mulled wine and eat typical snacks like peanuts, sweet potato, corn cake, hot dogs, cocoanut candy, popcorn and pine nuts. The women typically wear flared, colorful dresses and decorate their hair. The men wear checkered shirts, patched jeans and straw hats.
