A Talent Show for Art’s Sake
The Portuguese word “ciranda” refers to singing in groups, bringing people together for highlighting popular culture. Perhaps you have already heard of the “Talent Circle?” This event occurs at the end of November in the Association Center for the Promotion of Youth in the Santa Fé neighborhood in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. Without losing its original meaning, the Talent Circle is an opportunity for children and adolescents to show their cultural and artistic sides, along with others from the region who also participate. There in workshops for art and dance where the young artists present the fruit of the work done during the year.
Educators and Religious from the Institute saw that the children have much potential that could be shown to others in the community. The event was first held in 1996, and with only 28 days of preparation, the First Edition had 25 presentations of dance, music and theater. At that time there were no dance workshops, but the teachers animated the various teams, and after much effort, the event took shape. In 2011, about 160 children, adolescents, elderly persons and 20 teachers were inspired by Black Awareness Day on November 20, devoted to reflection on the presence of Blacks in Brazilian Society.
The Talent Circle has become a privileged place where participants can work on their gifts, exhibiting them to the community and having an opportunity to appreciate the talent of colleagues. Even former teachers come back and continue to support the goals of the Institute. In this way, the Association Center for the Promotion of Youth becomes a large family, awakening dreams, and showing individual talents to larger groups, in the daily exercise of respecting differences in dialogue and solidarity.
