International Day of the World's Indigenous People

Friday, Aug. 09, 2019.  Asha Niketan community Bhopal, Pachmarhi province observed World Tribal Day. The day was set aside to honour the tribal sisters of the community. During the introduction at the Eucharistic celebration S. Rashmi highlighted the contribution of the tribal community to the congregation. We have many sisters in the congregation belonging to various tribes all over the world. It is the first time that Indian government has thought of keeping aside this day for honouring the tribal communities of India.

Ashaniketan community has Sisters Johani, Susmita, Archana, Binita, Sanjita and Priyanka belonging to two different tribes – Oraon and Kharia. S. Johani has dedicated her life to doing full time pastoral ministry. S. Susmita is nurse and administrator of Ashaniketan hospital. S. Archana is a laboratory technician. Binita and Priyanka are nursing students. Sanjita is studying for diploma in X-ray.

The dinner after the Eucharistic celebration gathered the whole community of 36 sisters and the domestic workers who also belong to the tribal community. The quadrangle was decorated with pots, flowers and lamps according to the tribal culture.

The sisters joined in performing the tribal dance after dinner which raised the spirit of even the 100 year old sister - Ann Charlotte Watkins.  This day was observed keeping in mind the thrust of the congregation towards inter cultural living.
