07.30.2020 | "Those who love care and those who care love"

The quote from the book of Leonardo Boff: “The Common Home, Spirituality, Love” inspired us the associates and the Sisters of St. Joseph of São João dos Patos, Maranhão, to be involved in the community at this time pandemic. While protecting ourselves from the infection of the Coronavirus, we were concerned about those who are in health care and the cleaning of our common house. It is impossible to remain indifferent to such solicitude and heroism on the part of the selfless health professionals who risk their lives to take care of the lives of so many people infected by the virus. We were also concerned of the street sweepers who collect the waste and clean the streets in order to guarantee the cleanliness of the public spaces.

During this time, we had many prayer meetings with the help of social networks and WhatsApp which is praiseworthy. Our attitude of love moved us and we decided to find a way to be closer to one another, in this time of social distancing. This led us to prepare snacks for the health professionals of Covid 19\ hospitals, who attend the Emergency Care Unit (ECU), once a week, for two months. This action was carried out by the associates and Sisters, who work in the Centro Alternativa Solidária. It was very gratifying for us because for love there are no barriers, there is no distance.

We also decided to help the street cleaners who serve us at the risk of their own lives. Each member of the three groups involved in the action namely Associates, CAS (Centro Alternativa Solidária) and Sisters of St. Joseph contributed and raised a fund to buy a hygiene kit with five items to give to the street cleaners. The municipality\s construction secretary gave us the list of the names of 58 people. We managed to make the Kit and give to them. We experienced lot of joy in giving those kits.

These were our ways to care for the most vulnerable people in our community, during the time of pandemic, in addition to preparing 70 daily meals at Centro Alternativa Solidária (CAS). Children do not come to take the food, but mothers come to take the food for their children, using all preventive measures.

In times of pandemic, love needs to be more creative because the heart is imperative and cannot survive if it does not love. The verb to Care becomes the way to express love because those who care love and those who love care.
