07.12.2020 | Sisters of St. Joseph working to combat the Coronavirus

Sisters Assunta Techio and Zelinda Técchio are blood sisters who are members of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery. Since more than three months, they have been sewing trousseau for the Covid 19 area of the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Hospital in Vacaria in southern Brazil.

This trousseau comprises of aprons, pyjamas, sheets, bedspreads, caps and personal protective equipment (PPE’s), to be used in the Covid 19 area and in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Covid 19 Area comprises an exclusive area for the treatment of suspected patients and those who test positive for Coronavirus. This area has 30 exclusive beds and another 4 fully insulated ICU beds.

All protocols and directives are followed by work team in this area. This requires, constant change of clothes and PPE\´S among others. Srs. Assunta and Zelinda prepare the exclusive kits, with lab coats, aprons, sheets, pillowcases. They separate cutlery with individualized protection and make bags for discarded materials.
The Sisters are working on a project with disposable materials such as cardboard, sheets of paper, plastic packaging, CDs, used DVDs etc. to give donation to a lady who takes care of three grandchildren and makes her living by collecting recyclable garbage from the street.

In addition to the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Hospital receives a very special help from Sr. Sueli Barea, 76, a Franciscan Sister of the Parish Apostolate. She worked 28 years as a nurse and of which she worked 16 in this Hospital N. Sra. Oliveira. Now she is retired and prays for people who work in health Care. Among the things she likes to do is sewing. She sews many things for the Hospital and now during the pandemic her work is even more important. She says “it is one of the things I know to do and I like to do it and I am happy to be able to help, I feel great doing it".
