04.26.2020 | Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery collaborate with the project Emergenza Uvira

The Project is accompanied by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Italian Federation. Uvira is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, located at the north of Lake Tanganyika in the African continent.

The torrential rains of April 16 and 17 brought floods and deluge in the province of South Kivu and caused the death of more than 50 people and made hundreds of people homeless in addition to causing extensive damage to property.

The Sisters of St. Joseph received a message of thanks for their help, see the beautiful correspondence of April 23.

Dear friends, benefactors and dear Sisters,

Thank you for your true presence!

We started to receive offers for the “Uvira Emergenza” fund and we are deeply grateful for the aid. We have managed to reach food, clothes and blankets, for several people who lost everything because of the floods.

We decided to start with food first and then provide warm clothing, hoping that it will be possible to rebuild people\´s homes and repair the very damaged residential structures of those on mission. We are waiting for the rains to calm down. (Now we have alternating hours of dazzling sunshine and torrential rain).

People who lost their homes were welcomed into school buildings. We try to find a way along with them to help them. Yesterday, we "discovered" a group of 76 families, comprising of 626 people, who were only able to save themselves and nothing else.

It is not at all easy to take pictures of people in serious difficulty.  At the moment, we are just sending you a photograph of a group of elderly women whom we were able to clothe and feed (as proposed by the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, verses 35-44). Some of these elderly women were using walking sticks which resembled the staff of St. Joseph. But here we also want to remember your generous help that allows us to walk the path along with the most fragile.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

N.B. Please, if you involved friends, relatives or groups not known to us, we request you to send us the information by phone or email so that we can thank them individually.

Missione Suore di San Giuseppe - Torino

The General Council appreciates the generous contributions of the Provinces and Regions of the Congregation that make possible the solidarity and humanitarian gestures.
