04.05.2020 | Sisters of St. Joseph facing the Coronavírus Pandemic: Communities in Italy. - Sharing 9

Novitiate Community, Pisa, Italy - A creative laboratory of experiences

In this moment of crisis, which forces us to stay at home, in solidarity with all Italians, we felt that we had to put our gifts and skills into practice, and do it creatively, using the means that new technologies offer, to reach out to those who are living this quarantine time alone and with fear which is understandable. The novitiate community was thus transformed into a creative laboratory of experiences.

We broadcast the novena of St. Joseph live on Facebook and Instagram pages, taking Jesus spiritually through Eucharistic adoration to the homes of many families isolated from the quarantine.

Every week we make Sunday Gospel Reflection videos, offering personal prayer ideas to those who wish to pray with the Word of God. We share these videos via Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and Telegram.

We made ourselves available to the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Pisa to reach out to people in difficulty over the phone and give them a word of comfort and closeness along with information to access the support network being organized in the area.

We ourselves are committed to calling people we know who are alone and in difficulty, starting with the family members of our Sisters, friends with Covid 19 positive and the medical staff.

We have longer hours of community prayer especially the Eucharistic adoration. Before Jesus, we intercede for our suffering world and we thank Him for all the good that we see blooming at this time. Whenever possible, we publicize these moments of prayer on social media portals.

The absence of liturgical celebrations are making us experience the value of our baptismal priesthood and being a domestic church.

We believe that this time can become an opportunity for global human growth, an opportunity to overcome individualism and recognize ourselves as part of a single human family, and we pray to the Lord to help us not to lose this commitment to history.

    Casaletto Community, Rome, Italy

The Casaletto community decided to dedicate its quarantine time to prayer. Every day the Sisters gather around the Blessed Sacrament to worship and intercede for our country and the whole world, asking the Lord to remove this pandemic. May this experience of Pandemic renew our hearts.

Eucharistic adoration takes place in the community crypt, from 3 pm to 5 pm. The sisters from the third-floor infirmary are also spiritually united, and they remember all the Sisters of St. Joseph all over the world.

    Community of Ravenna, Italy

The Sisters of the community of Ravenna continue to serve the poor in the parish of San Rocco. Ravenna is located in Emilia Romagna, one of the regions most affected by the covid-19. The Sisters at the risk their own health have guaranteed the service of the canteen, which was transformed into a food distribution centre. They have guaranteed the homeless the possibility of an overnight shelter. They continue to participate in the ministry of the parish and the territory, ensuring their proximity to those who are going through difficult moment.  They do it over the phone and remember them in prayer.

    Ferentino Community, Italy

The Sisters continue to serve in the shelter home for women victims of violence. The shelter and the community are separated by only one door, so the Sisters are at the forefront of this emergency. The community, which also operates in the Caritas service centre and in the pastoral care of the sick, continues to guarantee its proximity and presence over the telephone.

Community of Acerra and Ceprano, Italy

All activities at the school of Acerra and the house of prayer at Ceprano have been suspended. The Sisters are dedicating themselves to look after those whom they know, ensuring their closeness in prayer and keeping in touch over the phone.

    Bolognetti Community, Rome

The community cannot stay at home. Sister Annamaria, a nurse at Fratebenefratelli Hospital on Tiber Island, is still on duty and we want to thank her for the work she is doing as a nurse in our country and for her mission to bring hope in these moments of darkness.
