Five years after the launch of Laudato Sí, through which all peoples were called to care for the Earth, our “Common Home”, Pope Francis promotes a worldwide meeting for educators, called the Pact for Education 2020. This will be an opportunity to dialogue on ways to include everyone\s talents and skills to build the planet\s future together and revive the commitment to young generations. The desire to promote this worldwide summit, which will commence on May 14, 2020, in the Paulo VI Hall of the Vatican in Rome, arises from the realization that any change needs an educational journey to bring about advancement in a new universal solidarity and a more welcoming society.
Join forces in an extended educational alliance
According to Pope Francis, "there was never, as now, a need to join forces in an extended educational alliance to form responsible people, capable of overcoming fragmentation and contrasts and reconstructing the fabric of relationships in order to build a more fraternal humanity." For this reason, he calls on educators to talk about the topic “Rebuilding the global educational pact”. To better explain the theme, the pontiff says that the promotion of consistent changes requires the commitment and participation of all. It is like building a “Education Village”, diversity is shared in the commitment to generate respectful, welcoming and open human relationships, overcoming any form of exclusion, discrimination, prejudice or bias.
For the educational journey towards the construction of a "common village"
The idea of an Education Village suggests that everyone who is part of this environment is co-responsible in the process of forming the individual and society. It suggests that an alliance be created that generates peace, justice, acceptance, inclusion and dialogue between religions and all peoples of the human family. For the educational journey towards the construction of a “common village” to take place, three important steps are proposed: the first is the courage to place the person in the centre; the second is the courage to invest the best energies with creativity and responsibility; the third is the courage to train available people to serve the community. The Pact for Education, launched on September 12, 2019, aims to be the beginning of yet another transformation process with a look of hope for the future. The great challenge is to seek ways together and together to cultivate the dream of a humanitarian solidarity that corresponds to the expectations of the human being and to the design of God.
