08.20.2019 | Sisters of St. Joseph take part in the 6th March of the Daisies

The March of the Daisies is a women\´s movement that emerged in Brazil in the year 2000. The chosen date is August 12, because it marks the death of rural worker and trade union leader Margarida Maria Alves, murdered in 1983 when she fought for workers\´ rights in Paraíba. The march mobilizes women workers in rural areas and in the cities belonging to feminist movements and trade unions, fighting to break away from all forms of discrimination and violence against women.

The movement became known as, "the largest and most effective action of women in Latin America", by bringing forth important debates regarding women, for making complaints, and pressuring and seeking constant dialogue and negotiation with the federal government.

In 2019, the March of the Daisies took place in Brasília, the Federal District.  Other marches took place in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. This year, the march had the participation of Sisters Ana Maria Goia and Maria da Consolação Rocha Coelho.

The sisters report what they experienced:

“It was a new experience; it was wonderful, with women and men from all over Brazil and from 27 countries, bringing the same dreams and desires, "for a Brazil with popular sovereignty, democracy, justice and freedom from violence”.

It was a moment of enriching conviviality, hope, and solidarity. It was beautiful to see the sharing of bread, water, space, and welcoming in all its implications among the crowd and the organizers of the event, an experience of God\´s Kingdom!

According to statistics, about 100,000 people were marching in the same direction, towards the Ministers’ Esplanade, loudly clamoring voices for all those who don\´t have time, voices of the absent, of forgotten society.

During the March, we missed the presence and participation of the Church and consecrated religious life, more involved with the poor, the biggest motivation for Jesus of Nazareth and his followers.

We, Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry and the Little Design, live the biblical experience of the crowd that followed Jesus, hungry and thirsty for righteousness, hungry and thirsting for a decent life for all, as is the desire of God.

We are deeply grateful for this unique experience in our life.
