03.17.2019 | Feast of Saint Joseph

     March, 2019

    Dear Sisters, Associates and Friends,

“… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Joseph) in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus...”
    (Mt 1:20-21)

“… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”
    (Mt 2:13)

We have no words from Saint Joseph. We don\´t know his origins, his age or who his parents were. According to the Bible, he only had dreams, and he is presented as a "righteous man". In the language of the times, this meant that he assumed leadership communally and was considered a point of reference for all.

Joseph exercised all the functions of a father, taking care of Mary in her pregnancy and protecting Jesus and his mother, Mary, when they had to flee into exile. He lived as a husband and as a foster father. He initiated his son into the religious traditions of the people and the profession of a carpenter. He sought a place for the Son of God to be born. He cared for him, monitored his growth, and taught him to listen and to be guided by the will of God. The man of dreams, the man of silence had enough faith and openness of mind and heart to act with courage and determination, with care and love.

The times of Joseph and ours times are different. Today, we see many children, adolescents and young adults deprived of guidance, someone to see to them, to teach them spiritual and ethical values and take risks in defense of family values, including unconditional inclusion and protection of life in all its forms. People lack relationships and meaning in life, a sense of transcendence. How can we, like Joseph, be a point of reference for other? How can we help each other to nourish our ability to dream? What place do tranquility and tenderness have in my life? What do my actions convey?

May we be inspired by the virtues of St. Joseph, and be people who are always more just, tender, simple, friendly and kind.

    Happy Feast Day!
