Saturday evening’s gathering in Paul VI Hall was full of life and hope. Close to 7000 Youth from all over Europe gathered to share their songs, dances and testimony of their personal struggles and of finding a welcoming space in the broader Church community. Some of aspects of their realities were: being refugees who lost members of their families during their escape; having spent time in prison for criminal acts engaged in when a member of a gang; prostitution; addiction to internet pornography; having a professional degree and job but receiving affection from strangers met on line; addiction to alcohol and drugs; and having to choose to say no to a job in his profession rather than be part of a company making missiles, when there is high unemployment.
They asked Pope Francis 9 different questions dealing with many aspects of their life including the need to find a quiet and welcoming space in which to grow in the midst of all the voices around them. They also asked how they can contribute to changing the negative and sad image of the Church as this time.
Pope Francis encouraged them to continue to ask questions because it shows their search for truth and their place in life. He invited them to continue the path , the journey toward God and their personal vocation.
I spoke with many of the youth and was surprised how many were there to have an experience of the Focolari movement here in Italy. It was a great evening.
